The atmosphere in Honeycutt Hall felt heavy, like the air before a storm. I moved through the kitchen, the smell of garlic and rosemary mixing with the tension that lingered since Rosalind’s death. My mind was racing with everything I’d learned so far. Each guest seemed to be hiding something, and I was determined to uncover the truth.

I spotted Evelyn leaning against the wall, her arms crossed tightly. The bond we once had felt stretched, almost broken. I needed to ask her about Rosalind, but part of me was scared of what I might find.

“Mae, can you come here a moment?” Evelyn called, her voice sharper than I expected. I wiped my hands on my apron and stepped over, my stomach tightening.

“What’s going on?” I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.

“I think I left something important in my room,” she said, glancing away. Her face showed a mix of worry and Maybe it was time to dig deeper.something else—was it guilt?

“Do you want me to help you look for it?” I offered, but I could tell she was hesitant.

“No, it’s... personal. Just don’t go through my things, okay?” She avoided my eyes, and I felt a chill run down my spine. Whatever it was, it seemed significant.

“Evelyn, this is serious,” I said, keeping my voice low. “Rosalind’s death isn’t just a tragedy. I think it’s connected to everyone here. You need to tell me if you know something.”

Her expression hardened. “I don’t know anything, Mae! You’re jumping to conclusions. Maybe you should stop investigating and just let the police do their job.”

I took a step back, my heart racing. “You’re acting strange. Why won’t you talk to me?”

“Because you won’t listen!” she snapped, her voice rising. “You think you’re some sort of detective now, but you’re not! You’re just an innkeeper!”

I couldn’t let her words sting me. I had to focus. “I’m trying to protect this place. Don’t you care about that?”

Evelyn rolled her eyes and walked away. I felt a mix of frustration and worry. Was my sister hiding something? I had to know.

As I turned to leave, my eyes caught the corner of the room where Rosalind’s things had been hastily shoved aside. I hesitated, torn between my loyalty to Evelyn and my need to find the truth.

I needed to get back to the library. Rosalind had mentioned her work there, and maybe there were clues hidden among her belongings. I slipped away, hoping no one would notice.

Once in the library, I scanned the room. Books lined the shelves, their spines dusty and worn. The light from the window cast a soft glow, illuminating the mess of papers scattered across a table. I moved closer, my heart pounding. Rosalind’s notes were chaotic, filled with wild ideas and bold plans.
